Grant Park Music Festival 2009 Spring Internships

The Grant Park Music Festival is now accepting applications for 2009 Spring Internship opportunities in the following areas:

Development and Special Events

The Grant Park Music Festival, Millennium Park's resident classical musical festival, is seeking a Development and Special Events Intern to help with planning of special events in preparation for the festival's upcoming 75th Anniversary in the summer of 2009.

The Development/Sponsorship intern works in close association with the Development and Sponsorship Coordinator. The Intern is responsible for assisting the Development department in duties pertaining to the successful implementation of fundraising activities taking place prior to the ten week Festival season, including the Festival’s annual 500 person gala, Divertimento. Specifically, the Development Intern will:

  • Maintain donor records, sponsorship compliance charts, onsite sponsorship promotions and other sponsorship recognition, major donor and board prospect tracking charts;
  • Assist with: the coordination of VIP events, mailing lists, committee meetings for gala/board development/fundraising committees;
  • Assist with preparation of sponsorship communications/materials, committee meeting minutes, and end-of-season fundraising appeal;
  • Maintain regular communication with 20+ corporate sponsors/250+ major donors/500 event guests, proper usage of corporate logos, prospect research.

This internship is an ideal experience for individuals seeking a career in event management; corporate, individual, and special event fundraising; nonprofit organization operations; and arts management.

As the internship is unpaid, strong emphasis will be placed on enabling the intern to customize the experience in order to finish with a highly professional work portfolio of projects for a major arts organization based in Chicago's Millennium Park. As the Festival is partially supported by both the Chicago Park District and Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, the position also offers excellent opportunities to gain exposure to a wide variety of high-level arts programs and professionals and to understand the challenges and opportunities of cutting-edge arts programming in the 21st century. Scheduling is flexible.

New Media/Marketing Internship

The Grant Park Music Festival, Millennium Park's resident classical musical festival, is seeking a New Media/Marketing Intern to help create content and infrastructure in a variety media in preparation for the festival's upcoming 75th Anniversary in the summer of 2009.

Project areas may be shaped around applicant's areas of expertise and interest and potentially include:

  • Creating/editing short videos and/or audio clips featuring interviews with musicians for placement on web-site and in eNewsletters.
  • Refining the festival's presence on social networking sites such as MySpace, Facebook, LinkedIn, SoFlow, Plaxo and others.
  • Developing format for blogs / online forums that would be used to solicit commentary from guest critics culled from members of the public.
  • Assisting in gathering materials, including comments & stories from the public, for the publication of a forthcoming 75th Anniversary book and CD.
  • Assisting in the development of a new web-site (being overseen by an outside contractor).
  • Helping implement e-marketing strategies to promote season members and special programs for the 2009 summer season.

In addition, the intern would have the opportunity to gain exposure to more traditional but highly strategic marketing initiatives, including the publication of a printed Season Brochure, Program Book, Membership Solicitation and Gala Promotional Materials.

Arts Management

The Grant Park Music Festival, Chicago's world-class free, outdoor classical music festival is seeking two unpaid Spring Interns for a variety of highly practical, hands-on projects in a combination of the following areas (we'll work to develop an internship that best fits your career and educational goals):

  • Assistance implementing strategic marketing ideas (including developing e-Newsletters and video podcasts).
  • Assistance overseeing orchestra auditions.
  • Assistance coordinating group visits for rehearsals and performances in Millennium Park and researching / developing scripts for back-stage tours and rehearsal talks.
  • Assistance assembling artist profiles for public relations and web purposes.
  • Assistance preparing for multi-media Season Preview event.
  • Assistance with Pre-Season and 75th Anniversary Season Donor events

Since this is an unpaid internship, we will work closely to provide strong arts career-oriented mentoring and provide opportunities to meet with and collaborate with a wide variety of professional arts staff from the Grant Park Music Festival, Millennium Park and the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs.

Hours are flexible - ideally 10 to 20 hours per week at our offices in Millennium Park in downtown Chicago.

The position would run from roughly January/February until mid-to-late spring. Following this, we will be considering candidates for paid Summer Staff positions.
