Laura Miller Biography

Laura Miller
Laura Miller

Laura Miller has been a member of the Grant Park Orchestra since 1988, and has held the position of Assistant Principal Second Violin since 1992. She is also a member of the first violin section of both the Lyric Opera of Chicago and the Music of the Baroque orchestras. In addition, Laura has frequently performed with chamber music groups, including the Brahms Horn Trio and the Lennox Berkeley Horn Trio, and she has appeared at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center.

A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Laura received her early musical training from her parents, both music educators. She continued her studies at the Cleveland Institute of Music as a pupil of Margaret Randall and David Cerone, winning second prize in the Cleveland Orchestra Competition when she was a senior in high school. Laura attended Indiana University, where she received a Bachelor of Music degree while studying with legendary violin professor Josef Gingold. Immediately after graduating, she won a coveted position with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, augmenting her schedule with summer studies at the Tanglewood Music Festival. Laura also served as Assistant Concertmistress of both the Colorado Music Festival Orchestra and the Colorado Music Festival Chamber Orchestra.

Laura Miller has performed live on WFMT Chicago radio broadcasts of chamber music, and has made recordings with Grant Park and Midsummer’s Music. In addition, she has recorded numerous national television and radio commercial jingles.

In addition to a busy performance schedule, she has taught violin privately, and at the Merit Music School in Chicago. Laura has performed live on WFMT Chicago radio broadcasts and was featured with Carlos Kalmar and several Grant Park colleagues on the cover of the international catalog “Design Within Reach,” to celebrate the inaugural season of the Jay Pritzker Pavillion in Millenium Park in 2004.
