A "Vintage" Carlos Kalmar Program

It’s a “vintage Carlos Kalmar program,” a patron told me when he looked at the description for the Stravinsky Firebird concert on our website. And it’s true…it is.

The suites of the Firebird are so well known and have been played all over the world. On June 23 and 24, you’ll hear not just the suites, but Stravinsky’s entire Firebird score, paired with two pieces that are rarely played on the radio or in a concert hall.

The evening opens with David Schiff’s Infernal, an obvious pairing in Kalmar’s mind, as he was putting together the season. “It’s a take on the Infernal Dance of Stravinsky’s Firebird, turned slightly to add a jazz touch,” said Kalmar.

In keeping with the Russian theme of the evening is the virtuosic Khachaturian Piano Concerto featuring the young American pianist, Conrad Tao. “It’s a little off the beaten track, but it’s very accessible and exciting,” Kalmar continues.

It’s an example of the care and consideration that the Festival’s Artistic Director brings to planning the entire Grant Park Music Festival season.
