The Grant Park Music Festival Fellowship Program offers an amazing opportunity to experience life as a professional musician! Come be a part of the nation’s longest running free outdoor summer classical music series. Join the Grammy Nominated Grant Park Orchestra under Artistic Director and Principal Conductor, Carlos Kalmar, and the award-winning Grant Park Chorus led by Director, Christopher Bell. The Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park, located right in the heart of Chicago’s magnificent downtown next to Lake Michigan, is the official home of the Grant Park Music Festival.

VOCAL FELLOWSHIP DETAILS

PROGRAM DATES: May 22 – June 23, 2018
AVAILABLE: Soprano (1), Alto (1), Tenor (1), Bass (1)
FELLOWSHIP STIPEND: $4,300.00 (approximation based on rehearsal/performance schedule) VIDEO APPLICATION DEADLINE: Friday, January 26, 2018
LIVE AUDITION FOR FINALISTS: Thursday, February 22, 2018

AUDITION REPERTOIRE REQUIREMENTS

1. Candidates will be asked to sing the following prepared choral excerpt(s):

2. Additionally, candidates should prepare two contrasting solos: oratorio excerpt, art song, or opera aria.

*applicants traveling over 50 miles may qualify for travel support

CELLO

Solo: First movement of a major concerto - exposition only

Excerpts:

  • Beethoven: Symphony No. 5, 2nd movement, mm. 1 - 10, 49 – 59, and 98 - 106
  • Mendelssohn: Midsummer Night’s Dream, Scherzo, letter N to letter O
  • Strauss: Don Juan, mm. 1 - 9 AND 7 measures before letter G to H

PROGRAM DETAILS

Accepted fellows must commit to the entire duration of the selected program:

  • Rehearse and perform all scheduled concerts with the Grant Park Orchestra, Chorus, and Apprentice Chorale
  • Individual and group coaching with Festival artistic leadership such as Chorus Director, Christopher Bell and Artistic Director Carlos Kalmar, world-renowned guest artists, and members of the Grant Park Orchestra and Chorus
  • Community Engagement and performance opportunities in neighborhoods throughout the city
  • Work with the Festival’s “Festival Connect” programs: Apprentice Chorale, Classical Campers, Pre-Concert Lectures, and Young Artist Showcase

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Be currently enrolled, or a recent graduate of a college-level voice or string program.
  • Applicants must be 18-29 years of age as of May 22, 2018 Be from a community or group that has been traditionally underrepresented in the symphonic choral and orchestral fields, including, but not limited to: underrepresented racial, ethnic, socioeconomic and geographic groups
  • Express a sincere interest in pursuing music as a career

Note: We do not require prospective fellows to audition with a collaborative pianist. That being said, the goal for your audition should be to achieve the most compelling and artistic performance possible. Most students find that performing an audition with a pianist brings them closer to that goal.
