Program Notes

Description

The Festival heads indoors to Millennium Park's other prized venue—the cozy Harris Theater for Music and Dance—for the sizzling Carmen Suite, based on music from Bizet's famous opera. Carlos Kalmar also conducts a symphony by Haydn and a work by American composer Caroline Shaw. Although this concert is closed to the public, it will be streamed live on Friday, July 30, 2021, at 6:30 PM.

In 1967, Cuban choreographer Alberto Alonso embarked upon a dance piece for the prima ballerina assoluta Maya Plisetskaya. It was to be inspired by the opera Carmen by Georges Bizet. Alonso had trouble settling upon a composer for the project when the solution was right under his nose: the ballerina's husband, Rodion Shchedrin was a well respected Soviet composer. Soon, Shchedrin had produced the Carmen ballet.

Fast forward to 2021, in anticipation of the Grant Park Music Festival performance of Shchedrin's score, choreographer Melina Bezanis created this video short with fellow dancers Rayan Lecuriex-Durival, Virginia Santussi and Thibaut Witzleb. Enjoy!
