Dmitri Shostakovich: Violin Concerto No. 1
Ralph Vaughan Williams: Dona Nobis Pacem
Two seminal works to come out of the mid-20th century, both impacted and influenced by a tumultuous age. Festival favorite Christian Tetzlaff returns to play Shostakovich's Violin Concerto No. 1, a piece that was hidden by its composer during a time when he was persecuted by the tyrant Joseph Stalin. Ralph Vaughan Williams wrote his choral masterwork Dona Nobis Pacem between the world wars as a plea for peace. Carlos Kalmar conducts the Grant Park Orchestra and Chorus.
