Program Notes

Description

It's a revolutionary piece written during a time of revolution—the Eroica Symphony originally bore a dedication to Napoleon, the great liberator (until he wasn't a liberator, at which point Beethoven changed the dedication). In any case, this symphony is broad, majestic, heroic and remains one of the monuments to Romanticism in music. Guest conductor Miguel Harth-Bedoya conducts Beethoven's Eroica Symphony along with music by Victor Agudelo and a marvelous new concerto by jazz great Billy Childs played by Chicago's own Rachel Barton Pine. The Billy Childs Violin Concerto No. 2 is a Grant Park Music Festival co-commission.
