Jean Sibelius: Finlandia
Samuel Barber: Cello Concerto
Aram Khachaturian: Suite from Spartacus
Music and rebellion! This week, rising star conductor David Chan makes his Grant Park Music Festival debut with Finlandia, a patriotic piece so viral, the Russian Tsar banned the Finnish people from playing it. And from ancient Rome comes Khachaturian’s crowd-pleasing tribute to the gladiator Spartacus. Cello virtuoso Alban Gerhardt plays the Romantic Cello Concerto by Samuel Barber.
