Broadway Sings America
The Broadway concert is one of the hallmarks of the Grant Park Music Festival season. Whether showcasing the works of legends like Rodgers and Hammerstein, or paying tribute to movie musicals, the Festival’s Broadway concerts with the Grant Park Orchestra and Chorus are one of the most popular programs of the summer.
But, this year needed to be different. As the nation commemorates its 250th anniversary, the Festival wanted to shine a light on the American musical. They turned to Scott Coulter, one of New York’s most honored vocalists, and the creator of numerous symphonic tourism productions.
“To celebrate America's 250th birthday, we looked at how the Broadway musical has told the story of America,” said Coulter, creator, director, host and vocalist of the Festival’s Broadway Sings America concert.
This world-premiere event focuses on Broadway musicals from the last one hundred years, each showing an aspect of America’s history. “From the young nation's early days (Hamilton) to the Roaring '20s (Chicago) to the turbulent '60s (Hair), Broadway has been singing the story of America for decades,” Coulter shared.
He brings together three powerhouse vocalists to join him on the stage—Blaine Krauss, of Hamilton fame, Tiffany Mann, whose Broadway credits include Waitress and Be More Chill, and acclaimed Broadway belter, Jessica Hendy.
Jason Seber leads the 80-piece Grant Park Orchestra through the sweeping songbook of hits from Annie, Chicago, Funny Girl, Gypsy, Grease, Hair, Hairspray, Hamilton, Rent, South Pacific and West Side Story.
And another group of powerhouse voices—the Grant Park Chorus—is a part of this America250 celebration. “The fabric of America is made up of countless stories,” said Coulter. “Having so many glorious voices coming together in song to celebrate our history—this is going to be magnificent.”
